AI is accelerating cyber threats - but compliance is still lagging behind

AI is accelerating cyber attacks - but compliance is still lagging behind.

The cyber threat landscape is changing faster than most organisations can keep up. Artificial intelligence has fundamentally shifted the dynamics of how attacks are planned, launched, and scaled, and the numbers are stark. According to the CrowdStrike 2026 Global Threat Report, the fastest recorded eCrime breakout time is now just 27 seconds, and attacks by AI-enabled adversaries increased by 89% in 2025 alone. Europe, meanwhile, is one of the hardest-hit regions, as reported by Euronews, over 3.2 million DDoS attacks targeted EMEA countries in the first half of 2025.

In short, what once took attackers weeks can now happen in minutes. And for most organisations, the ability to respond has not kept pace.

This matters for three reasons:

  • The window between vulnerability discovery and active exploitation is shrinking to hours, or sometimes even less.
  • Attackers are no longer limited by human capacity; AI removes that ceiling entirely.
  • Regulated sectors, including finance and critical infrastructure, face the highest exposure

The new reality: compressed timelines

Traditional security models were built on the assumption of time – time to detect a vulnerability, prioritise a fix, and deploy a patch. AI is eroding that assumption at every step. Vulnerabilities are now identified faster, exploited sooner, and attacks are scaled more efficiently than ever before. When a weakness can be discovered and weaponised before most IT teams have even started their morning, the old model simply does not hold.

Compliance is no longer a slow process

It is worth noting that frameworks like DORA and NIS2 were not designed for a slower era. They were built precisely for this kind of environment; one in which threats are continuous and organisations must be able to demonstrate readiness at any moment. These frameworks require continuous risk monitoring, up-to-date controls, immediate incident response, and documented accountability. Compliance, in other words, is no longer something you do once a quarter. It is an ongoing operational discipline.

Yet many organisations still treat it as a project – something reviewed periodically, documented manually, and managed across disconnected systems. That gap between how compliance is treated and what regulators actually expect is itself a risk.

The real risk: operational lag

The most dangerous exposure for many small and medium-sized organisations is not a lack of intent but operational lag. Without real-time visibility into their risk posture, dependent on manual processes and scattered documentation, these organisations struggle to maintain consistent oversight. The result is a dangerous mismatch: fast-moving threats against slow-moving governance.

From reaction to control

Closing this gap requires a shift in mindset. From reactive patching to proactive risk management, from static documentation to dynamic compliance tracking, and from fragmented tools to a single source of truth. Structured compliance, approached this way, is not bureaucracy. It is operational resilience.

A new baseline

AI is not just making attacks more sophisticated, it is making them faster, cheaper, and more accessible to a wider range of threat actors. The question organisations face today is no longer whether they will be targeted, but whether they can understand their exposure, act in time, and prove that they are in control. Because in today’s environment, being compliant is not just about meeting requirements – it is about keeping pace with reality.

This is what Trustlinks is built for. A single platform that gives all organisations the clarity, control, and confidence to stay on top of compliance, even as demands keep evolving.
